TCS Resume Format 2026: The Structure That Gets Shortlisted

PS

Priya Sharma · Career & Resume Specialist

TCS receives lakhs of fresher applications through the NQT every year. The resumes that get shortlisted share the same clean, ATS-parseable structure — here is exactly what it looks like, section by section.

How TCS Hiring Actually Works

TCS hires freshers mainly through the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT). Your test score decides your band: Ninja (the base entry role), Digital (a higher package with a tougher paper), and Prime (the top package, hardest to crack). The resume is not what lets you sit the test — anyone eligible can register on the TCS NextStep portal and attempt the NQT.

Your resume matters at the next stage. After you clear the NQT, the interviewer reads your resume live during the technical and HR rounds, and every skill and project on it is fair game for questions. So the resume has two jobs: it has to be clean enough for the portal to parse without scrambling your details, and it has to be consistent with the marks and skills you have declared.

One concrete point freshers miss: at document verification, TCS checks your declared numbers against your original marksheets. Any mismatch between your resume and your actual 10th, 12th, or graduation marks can get your candidature cancelled even after you clear every round. If you are targeting off-campus drives, read our TCS and Infosys off-campus resume guide and the full TCS hiring profile before you apply.

The Resume Format TCS Expects

There is no secret template. TCS expects a boring, readable, standard format — the same format that survives an ATS and reads well in a five-minute interview scan. Five rules cover almost everything:

  • Single-column, reverse-chronological. Skip two-column and sidebar templates. When an ATS reads a two-column layout top to bottom, the second column often gets interleaved into the first and your details come out scrambled.
  • Save as PDF unless the portal asks for .docx. A text-based PDF keeps your layout intact and stays machine-readable. Only upload a .docx if the NextStep or iBegin form specifically requires it.
  • One page for freshers. You do not have twelve years of experience to justify a second page. One tight page signals that you can prioritise what matters.
  • Standard section headings — Education, Technical Skills, Projects — not creative labels like “My Journey.” The parser looks for standard headers to map your content into fields.
  • No photos, tables, text boxes, icons, or graphics. These break parsing. A passport photo adds nothing for a TCS application and often pushes your content onto a second page.

Section by Section: What Goes Where

For a TCS resume the Education section is not a footer — it is the second thing the interviewer checks after your name, because TCS eligibility is marks-driven. Here is every section a one-page fresher resume needs and exactly what belongs in each:

Contact

Name, phone with +91, a professional email, your city, and a LinkedIn URL. No full postal address, no photo, no date of birth.

Career Objective

Two lines, TCS-appropriate: name the role or band you are targeting and one genuine strength. Drop the vague “seeking a challenging role.”

Education

MANDATORY and detailed: 10th %, 12th % (or diploma), and graduation degree with CGPA or %. Add “No active backlogs” if true — TCS eligibility is strict (often 60% throughout with no standing backlogs at interview time).

Technical Skills

Grouped for readability: Languages, Databases, Tools/Frameworks. Only list what you can be questioned on live.

Projects

Two projects, each with its tech stack and one outcome line (what it did or what result it produced), not just a title.

Internships / Training

Any internship, industrial training, or virtual internship, with month-year dates. Even a short one shows applied exposure.

Certifications

NPTEL, Coursera, TCS iON, or similar — with the year. Relevant technical certs strengthen a non-CS background.

Achievements

Coding profiles (HackerRank, LeetCode, CodeChef), hackathon results, or academic ranks. Concrete signals of ability.

Keywords and Skills TCS Screens For

Align your keywords to your band and to the exact role you applied for. For a Ninja or Digital software track, the technical interview almost always touches at least one programming language (C, C++, Java, or Python), DBMS and SQL, OOP concepts, and Data Structures and Algorithms. If those appear on your resume, make sure each one also shows up in a project or in code you can actually write on the spot.

Mirror the stack in the job description. If the role mentions Java, then “Java” should appear in your Technical Skills and in a project bullet — not floating alone in a skills list. TCS hires across all branches, so if you are from Mechanical, Civil, or ECE applying for an IT role, list the languages and tools you have genuinely practised, even self-taught ones, plus your final-year project stack. For a role-by-role view of which terms to include, see our resume keywords list.

The one rule that matters: put keywords in context, never in a stuffed block. A TCS interviewer will pick any skill on your resume and ask you to write code or explain it — so a keyword you cannot defend hurts you more than a gap you are honest about.

Common Fresher Mistakes for TCS

Most rejected fresher resumes fail on the same handful of avoidable mistakes:

  • Inconsistent education details. Percentages on the resume that do not match the marksheets. This is the single most common reason candidatures are dropped at TCS document verification — get every number exact.
  • Unexplained gaps. A gap year or a dropped semester with no one-line explanation raises a flag. State it plainly and briefly rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.
  • Overdesigned templates. Canva resumes with sidebars, colour blocks, and icons that an ATS cannot read cleanly. Pretty is not the goal — parseable is.
  • Generic objective. A copy-pasted “seeking a challenging position” that names neither TCS nor a role. It reads as effort you did not make.
  • Hiding backlogs. An active backlog you left off surfaces during verification anyway. TCS eligibility is checked — honesty with a plan reads far better than a discovered omission.

Before You Submit: Check Your TCS Resume

The fastest way to know whether your resume is TCS-ready is to test it against the actual role. Paste the TCS job description (or the role you are targeting) and your resume into our free ATS scanner. In about 30 seconds it shows which of the keywords TCS screens for you are missing, and flags formatting that an ATS would struggle to parse.

The free scan is enough for most freshers to fix the gaps themselves. If you want the polished version — AI-rewritten bullet points that fold in the missing keywords, plus a fresh score — a paid scan (₹149 in India) gives you a full rewrite of your experience and projects. Frequently Asked Questions

What resume format does TCS accept?
TCS accepts a single-column, reverse-chronological resume, ideally saved as a text-based PDF (upload a .docx only if the TCS NextStep or iBegin portal specifically asks for it). Keep it to one page, use standard section headings like Education, Technical Skills, and Projects, and avoid photos, tables, columns, and graphics that break ATS parsing. The marks you declare on the resume must match your marksheets exactly.
Should a TCS resume be 1 or 2 pages?
One page for freshers and early-career applicants. You do not yet have enough verified experience to justify two pages, and a single tight page is far easier for the interviewer to scan during a short TCS interview. Two pages only become reasonable after several years of real work experience.
Do I need to mention my 10th and 12th marks on a TCS resume?
Yes. TCS eligibility is marks-driven, so your Education section must clearly list your 10th percentage, 12th percentage (or diploma), and graduation CGPA or percentage. Both the interviewer and the document-verification team check these against your original marksheets — leaving them out or rounding them up is a common cause of rejection at verification.
Does TCS use an ATS to screen resumes?
TCS collects resumes through its NextStep and iBegin portals, and those systems parse your file, so an ATS-unfriendly format with columns, tables, or images can garble your details. More importantly, after you clear the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT), a human interviewer reads your resume live. It must be both machine-readable and accurate — and both point to the same clean, single-column layout.
